Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) states that one person dies every 6.5 seconds because of diseases caused by smoking habit. Researches shows that early smokers and those who actively smoke for more than 20 years will die 20-25 years younger than nonsmokers. Smoking also increases the rate of coronary heart disease and stroke by 2 to 4, depending on how long the person has been smoking, and how many cigarettes he/she smokes every day.

In general, the world’s mortality rate due to smoking habit is estimated at 5 million people/ year and is expected to exceed 8 million people/ year by 2030.

Cigarettes contain more than 4,000 chemical agents, including nicotine and carbon monoxide. These substances damage the structure and function of blood vessels, thus increasing the risk of atherosclerosis in blood vessels, where the vessels become stiff and narrow, causing increase of heart rate and blood pressure.

Smoking also increases blood coagulation factor (by platelet and fibrinogen), making it easier for blood clotting to happen in the vessels, reduces the intake of oxygen by the heart, lowers the level of HDL (good cholesterol), as well as increases the levels of triglyceride, which contributes to cardiovascular disease.

Someone who quit smoking for 2 to 4 years will reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by 50%. However, the risk of former smokers remains higher than those of non-smokers’, even though the person has stopped smoking for 10 years. Risks of coronary heart disease will return to the baseline after someone quit smoking for 20 years.

In Indonesia, as many as 82% of patients with heart diseases are smokers. Therfore, let’s follow the footsteps of those who have succeeded in quitting smoking. Although it is difficult at first, with strong determination and faith that you can live without smoking, your efforts will succeed undoubtedly. Remember, it’s never too late to quit smoking!

In the middle of December 2011, during his business trip to Pekanbaru, Ganesh suddenly passed out and was unconscious. He was rushed to the nearest hospital. After 4 days being in ICU room, this energetic man kept experiencing repeated chest pain and his body didn’t respond to the medicines were given. His blood pressure was decreasing. Doctor suggested conducting heart catheterization to assess the condition of coronary heart vessel, and if possible stenting would be done. Ganesh and family agreed to do that, and he was referred to Eka Hospital Pekanbaru for the treatment.

As he arrived at Eka Hospital, Dr. Jajang Sinardja, SpJP along with team of doctors of Eka Hospital immediately conducted catheterization through right arm. Result showed a total occlusion on the right coronary vessel and a critical narrowing on the main left vessel. Ganesh’s life only depended on the little blood residual which could pass the narrowing on the main left vessel. It is a very critical situation that threatened life. The first aid for this condition should be performed in a hospital with complete cardiac surgical facilities, but Ganesh’s condition was impossible to be sent off.

The only life saving was opening the narrowing on the left main vessel by ballooning then stenting. But that treatment would put him in a high risk. “Remembering the high risk I would take, Doctor Jajang had to reconfirm my family’s permission,” explained Ganesh. My beloved family still wanted to conduct the stenting. Thanks to all the prayers, the stenting was done well. It was all because of the solid teamwork between team of doctors and medical staff. “They have proven their fast first aid service for the sake of patient’s health,” complimented Ganesh.

Ganesh experienced such a great change in his body after the stenting. No more chest pain that will annoy his activities. One big lesson was that he stopped smoking and promised to run a healthy life. Dr. Jajang Sinardja, SpJP reminded him to undergo treatments for the other coronary vessels, because the stenting was only the first aid that must be done immediately.

Ganesh was in shock for the coronary heart disease he was suffered from, “I never guessed before that I could have suffered from this disease. This event has made me realize that God is giving me another chance to run a more healthy life,” said Ganesh. Now he can do his daily activities well, with joy in his face.

In general headaches can be classified into two types, primary headache and secondary headache. Primary headache is a headache that appears due to the response of stress (either physically or psychologically). Primary headache itself is divided into three types, Tension Headache, Migraine, and Cluster Headache.

Tension Headache is the most complained headache by patients with the symptoms as pain in the both sides of the head and sometimes the pain spread to the neck. Usually this type of headache is caused by stress, lack of sleep, tiredness or stiffed muscles.

While migraine is a throbbing headache in one side of the head, that usually lasts for a couple of hours. Migraine patients will get sensitive to light, voice, and smell.

Cluster Headache is a headache in the area around the eyes or in behind them. It feels like being pin-pricked and is usually accompanied by other symptoms, such as nasal congestion, watery and red eyes in one of the sore eyes. This type is commonly suffered by men.

Secondary headache is a headache that is accompanied by neurorological disruption symptoms, such as seizure, crossed eyes, double vision and weakness in one of the motion organs. Secondary headache can be caused by pathological abnormalities in the brain. These abnormalities are brain tumor, stroke, thrombosis, heavy hypertension (malign), brain infection (meningitis, encephalitis, abscess) or brain’s vessel abnormalities, such as aneurysm and AVM (Artiriovenous Malformation). This headache must be look out for and needs medical treatment immediately.

“I am not afraid of riding a motorcycle anymore..”

It began in November 10^th 2011 when Sella and her two friends were on their way to the course class by riding a motorcycle. Somehow and surprisingly, they lost control and accident happened. It happened so fast that they couldn’t avoid it.

When Suratih heard about this shocking news, she could only surrender to God about her daughter condition. Without wasting too much time, Sella was rushed to the nearest clinic to get the first aid. After been treated for one day in the clinic, then she moved to Eka Hospital Pekanbaru due to her bad condition.

Once she arrived at the Emergency Unit of Eka Hospital on November 12^th 2011, Sella was directly treated by team of doctors at Eka Hospital. The result showed that this cheerful girl suffered serious injuries in the face area. The accident caused a shifting of cheekbones and her left hand bone. Her nose bone and chin bone also both eyes suffered a great fracture.

Recognizing Sella’s condition, team of plastic surgeons at Eka Hospital immediately conducted Endoscopic Plastic Surgery with Total Transconjunctival technique. This technique was done by placing plates on the face without having to do a major surgery over the head. The plates were placing through the incision from the eyes to fix the great fractures on the cheekbones, nose bone also both eyes. Meanwhile for the chin bone, the placing was done through incision from the mouth.

After waiting for 5 hours, the surgery finally was done successfully. Suratih was overjoyed with tears when she looked the result. She almost couldn’t believe what she saw, that Sella’s face was perfect without any injuries and stitch at all. Suratih showed her gratitude to the team of doctors for their professionalism and sincerity.

After the healing process that took 11 days, Sella finally could return home. Even she still has to do regular check up to doctor, Sella was so happy that she could return to her school and play with her friends. The most surprising thing that she said she’s not afraid of riding a motorcycle anymore.
